The United Nations (UN) has called for an independent investigation into a violent crackdown on an anti-UN protest in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). During a military operation to prevent the demonstration, at least 43 people were killed and 56 injured. An army document confirms that the death toll reached 48, including one slain policeman, with an additional 75 people wounded. Shockingly, the document also reveals that 168 individuals were arrested, including the leader of the Christian-animist group that was protesting against UN peacekeepers. Furthermore, reports indicate that at least 222 people, including women and children, were also arrested.
