Speaker Mike Johnson vows to advocate for aid to Israel and Ukraine this week: Plans in progress

House Speaker Mike Johnson is facing political pressure from GOP lawmakers as he attempts to push through wartime aid for both Israel and Ukraine this week.

Johnson has been holding onto a $95 billion supplemental package that includes funding for US allies, humanitarian aid for Ukraine and Gaza, as well as funding to replenish US weapons to Taiwan. The recent attack on Israel by Iran has only added to the urgency of approving the funding.

The House Speaker has expressed support for structuring the aid as loans for Ukraine, utilizing frozen Russian assets, and implementing other policy changes. The only package with bipartisan support in Congress is the Senate bill, which includes $60 billion for Ukraine and $14 billion for Israel.

Johnson has been in talks with both the White House and former President Donald Trump to navigate the complicated funding situation for Ukraine. However, support for Ukraine has waned in recent years, presenting a challenging problem for Johnson to solve.

GOP lawmakers who back aid for Ukraine are growing increasingly frustrated with the delay in bringing the funding to the House floor. Johnson is working to find a package that includes policy victories for Republicans while still keeping Democrats on board.

Most House Democrats support the Senate bill and have called on Johnson to bring it to the floor for immediate aid to Ukraine. As pressure mounts and the situation in both Israel and Ukraine remains dire, all eyes are on Johnson as he navigates these delicate negotiations.
