Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed on Thursday that the situation is “getting into the mind” of the United States and its allies about escalating border tensions with Ukraine and denied that it was real on the ground. .

“This whole situation is not happening on the territory of Russia, it is happening in the mind and in the media, above all in the United States and the United Kingdom,” Lavrov said during a meeting with his Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio.

According to the Russian news agency Sputnik, before accusing NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg of raising fears about it, he insisted, “any questions they should ask about how to resolve the escalation.”

He also said Moscow would send its response to the United States on Thursday on counter-proposals submitted by Washington on European security issues. “We are finalizing the analysis of the US response,” he said.

Mr. Lavrov also pointed out that the letter would be made public once it was sent. “We believe that it is essential for civil society in our countries to be aware of what is happening,” he said. “Otherwise, if confidentiality is maintained, as Washington and Brussels prefer, public opinion will be filled with lies and crude propaganda that saturates the information space today,” he said.

In recent days, Russia announced the withdrawal of its forces from the border area with Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula, although the United States was skeptical. In fact, a senior US official said on Wednesday that the number of troops has increased by 7,000 in the last few days.

Tensions around Ukraine have been heightened in recent months by the deployment of Russian troops to the country’s border, which the international community sees as a possible preparation for an “invasion”. Russia has denied these allegations and accused NATO of increasing its military activity in the region.
