Roman Abramovich has entrusted Chelsea’s ‘caretaker and care’ to the club’s charitable foundation following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Lawmakers this week called on Russia-born Abramovich not to be allowed to own Chelsea because of alleged ties to Vladimir Putin’s regime.

In a rare statement from Abramovich published on the club’s website, the Chelsea boss said: “In my nearly 20 years as owner of Chelsea FC, I have always contemplated my role as the club’s goalkeeper, whose job it is.” Ensuring that we are as successful today as possible by playing a positive role in our communities, building for the future.

“I have always taken decisions in the interest of the club,” he said. I stick to these values. I therefore today entrust the management and care of Chelsea FC to the Trustees of the Chelsea Charitable Foundation.

“I think they are currently in the best position to protect the interests of the club, players, staff and supporters.”
