Welsh Prime Minister Mark Drakeford claimed the prime minister was not protecting England

The Welsh prime minister doubled down on his comments, accusing Prime Minister Boris Johnson of “ignoring the science” on COVID-19 by refusing to introduce new measures to stop the spread of Omicron.

Speaking to Sky News on Sunday, Prime Minister Mark Drakeford reiterated claims that England was a “Global Outer” and did not save its residents from the current wave of COVID-19.

Drakeford said he was constantly asked why Wales was not doing the same thing as England. “My response was to point out that in this debate it is not Wales that stands apart”, Scotland, Northern Ireland and other countries around the world are doing the same, he said.

He said that it was not for him to respond on behalf of the British Government, which has jurisdiction over England. “I guess they didn’t do what science told them to do”, he said, reiterating Friday’s remark in which he said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was “Ignore Science”.

Wales is currently under Alert Level 2 restrictions, with mandatory indoor masks and restaurant reservations limited to six people. Indoor events of more than 30 people and outdoor events of more than 50 people are prohibited.

“When we have different messages on our border, it becomes hard for us” Drakeford added.

Despite no restrictions in England, the UK’s most populous country has the lowest COVID-19 infection rate; The current figure is 1,924 cases per 100,000 people. By comparison, the infection rate in Wales is 2,380 cases per 100,000 people.

Welsh rules have also angered many players, with Drakeford insisting that the home stadium of England’s Chester football team is in Wales and that they should therefore play their matches behind closed doors. Welsh rugby stars have also called for their upcoming Six Nations Games to be played in England to avoid playing in empty stadiums.
