The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has announced that there are currently 100,000 US troops in Europe to defend the countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

This came from a press conference organized by Biden on Thursday at the end of the G7 and NATO summits in the Belgian capital Brussels.

He said Russian President Vladimir Putin had tried to sow division among NATO members, but had achieved the exact opposite of what he wanted to achieve, noting that the current crisis has made for a more cohesive organization.

In this context, Biden warned that the United States would retaliate if Russia used chemical weapons in Ukraine, stressing that the response would depend on the nature of these weapons use.

The US President said that NATO members are considering the creation of an organization that will closely monitor the application of sanctions imposed on Russia and report those who violate them.

Biden, on the other hand, revealed his country’s plan to welcome around 100,000 Ukrainian refugees.

On 24 February, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine, which was followed by a wave of anger and several international backlashes, as well as the imposition of strict economic and financial sanctions on Moscow.

To end its operation, Russia called on Ukraine to abandon any plans to join military entities, including NATO, and to adhere to a position of total neutrality, which Kyiv considers internal interference in its affairs.

According to the latest figures released by the United Nations, more than 3.5 million Ukrainian refugees have left the country and moved to neighboring countries due to Russian interference in Ukraine.
