This is Donald Trump’s most concise – and brutal – Republican rejection you will ever read.

Yes, he says things that past presidents could never make public (and tweets). Yes, it works without any plans or plans, and instead chooses to install wings. Yes, it takes credit for everything and blames for nothing. Yes, he has honored his carefully crafted relationships with friends and enemies around the world for decades.

But there’s a lot to be said about Trump’s radicality, everything cancels itself.

(It reminds me of a Simpsons episode where the old tycoon Monty Burns decided to be physical. A series of tests are being done, and doctor Burns says, “He’s the sickest man in the entire United States.” And yet Mr. Burns is healthy. Why? “We call it ‘Three Stooges Syndrome’,” says Dr. Burns, while all illnesses bore each other trying to attack his body. Watch here.)

However, once in a while, someone can break up the mess and nail exactly what makes Trump as unusual as the president. Steve Schmidt, who ran the 2008 presidential campaign of John McCain during the weekend, was that person in an interview with MSNBC.

Here is Trump’s analysis, lasting almost two minutes (and private voiceover Allison Gordon from CNN for transcription!):

“Donald Trump has been the worst president this country has ever had. I’m not saying that hyperbolically. It is. But ultimately it’s a president. And he brought this country to a weak place in three short years. If you think we were where Barack Obama left office today it was unthinkable, and many of us were deeply skeptical and very worried about what Trump’s presidency would be that day, unique national humiliation, weakness.

“When you listen to the President, these are the influx of an imbecile. An idiot. And I don’t use these words to call the call. I use them because they are the precise words of the English language to describe their behavior. A level of incompetence that is not surprising daily by anyone accused of important responsibilities in the history of the country. We didn’t see a level of incompetence.

“It is astonishing that this man is the president of the United States. The man from New York City, the man against him. A lot of bankruptcy, failed business, a reality show that marks him as something he has never been. Now the President of the United States and the country is great again. the man who said he would make it and brought death, suffering and economic collapse on a truly epic scale and let’s be open in every country of the world … This is our home, our home, our country, the United States, the epicenter, we are the most likely to die from this disease. And because of the fool sitting in the Oval Office behind the shattered table. “

As I said: Brutal. But it is also a concise and brief evaluation of what Trump’s incumbent behavior – from the coronavirus to police brutality and back protests – was for the Republican Party and the country.

Now, Schmidt is undoubtedly a leading voice in the “Never Trump” movement. Founder of the Lincoln ProjectAn effort aimed at defeating Trump in November.

Schmidt is also a lifelong Republican. He worked in Lamar Alexander’s 2000 presidential campaign. He worked at Capitol Hill for Republicans. He served as the communications director of House GOP’s campaign arm. He helped Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger help the California governor. He directed the McCain campaign.

This is not someone who has an unclear relationship with the Republican Party over and over again. Schmidt is a partisan fighter for much of his professional life. Republican has been much longer than Donald Trump.

And so, although it is easy for Trump loyalists to refuse Schmidt’s condemnation of the President, it’s not that simple. Yeah, Schmidt is someone who doesn’t hide his hatred for Trump. However, this does not mean that what he said about the President above was wrong. Or should be ignored.
