It was announced but not official yet, no more doubts this time. The World Cup will be played in 2022.
Pressure from Australia and New Zealand withdrew from the tournament got the better of the organizing committee. Actually, the World Cup to be held in October has been postponed till next year. Decisions driven by uncertainty about the absence and health status of 2 great nations. As a result, the RLWC 2021 Organizing Committee and the government have decided to postpone the event. A postponement that will cost England but which prefers to assume that compared to a shorter tournament. The organization’s CEO, John Dutton, spoke:
Today is a difficult time for everyone involved in rugby league, but especially for players and fans from competitive countries. In the end, the times and priorities of others forced us to make the most difficult decision in our six-year history. However, we and the game of rugby league are resilient, and next year we will provide our vision for the biggest and best Rugby League World Cup ever. We have always supported the voice of the players and the choices of the players. We set up a working group, interviewed senior players and conducted a survey of national players in Australia and New Zealand over the past few days, which showed that over 85% wanted to participate in RLWC2021 this year. However, following the disappointing decision to step down by the ARLC and NZRL and the subsequent impact on player availability for other competing nations, it is clear that it will not be possible to run the tournament this year. The well being of everyone involved in the tournament, especially the players and team officials, has been our priority. I would like to thank the RLWC2021 Board of Directors and our team for the hard work and extraordinary measures that have been taken to create a safe and secure environment in line with other major sporting events that have been successfully held in the UK this year.
We can announce this morning that the tournament will be postponed to 2022. We have done everything in our power to stage the tournament this year, but that doesn’t have to happen. I
Keep supporting the tournaments, teams, players and all of our amazing games. ️
