He is already 25 years old, but now Botic van de Zandschulp shows on the main stage for the first time how well he can play tennis. The tall tennis player reached the quarterfinals of the US Open yesterday at the expense of world number 11 Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.
Comparisons can easily be made with Martin Verkerk. Around the same age, he reached the final of Roland Garros out of nowhere in 2003. It’s not too far for the Veenendal player, but things are going well.
According to NOS commentator Marcela Mesker, van de Zandschulp is a very complete tennis player. “His tennis is phenomenal,” she says along the line On NPO Radio 1. “Scoring ability, stamina, light footwork and the power of a big man.”
“And then he has tennis instincts. Fulling over the net, lobs, a stop volley, a drop shot. And then another streak from the forehand or an ace from a serve. He has the whole game.”
But why this cover all of a sudden? “Two years ago he made a good move by rejoining the KNLTB on the recommendation of the guy who coached Remco Schreers. I think it helped him a lot,” said his coach, Mitchell Schapers.
Mesker thinks Van de Zandschulp has turned a switch in his head. “He has found the discipline to do his homework every day.”Braun (nun): we
