In U.S. elections, Americans vote for so-called “electors” in their state who support a candidate who wants to be president – a process called electoral college.

The more people live in a state, the more electorate there are for the state. So, for example, California with a population of 38.8 million has 55 votes – Delaware (pop. 936,000) has only three votes.

There are currently a total of 536 voters, 435 delegates (Congressmen and women) and 100 senators, and three additional elected representatives from the District of Columbia. The constitution prohibits any federal official from being elected or appointed.

The candidate with the highest number of voters wins the Electoral College vote in all the states and the first candidate who wins in the state sufficient to get 2 candidate0 electoral votes is elected in that office.

Who can be president?

The President of the United States can be a man or a woman of any race or religion, but they must:

• Must be at least 35 years old
• Born in the United States
• Has lived in the United States for at least 14 years

The rules also state that a person can stay in the job for a maximum of eight years. (The only exception was Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was elected for a special third time at the head of World War II.)

The two presidential candidates in the 2020 election are Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden, who served as vice presidents from 2009 to 2017 under the Obama administration.

What is Electoral College?

The Electoral College elects the President of the United States of America. When an American citizen votes for them, they do not directly like any presidential candidate. Instead, they choose an officer who will present them at the “college”. The term college translates to a large number of people (elected officials) who have work to do in the presidential election, and this role is implemented a few weeks after the election day results.
