Vaccination: Google updates its Passes API

The mountain view giant has just updated the API of its Maps system on Android to allow easier access to information on COVID-19 testing and vaccines. Thus, a user will no longer need to open a dedicated application to display the QR code, which certifies that he has been vaccinated or tested.

It doesn’t matter if you have been vaccinated or your PCR test is negative, you still have to prove it. This is the position to reach a growing number of places and events. Across the world, including France, in addition to the paper version, administrations and other government health agencies provide dematerialized documents, usually with a QR code, usually through a dedicated mobile application.

However, Google is updating the Passes API of its Google Pay service to make this information more accessible, especially in the event of a poor network or rapidly draining battery. It allows you to save and display loyalty cards and more, including a welcome shortcut. Why not extend it to vaccination cards, the web giant said.

No sooner said than done. The updated API allows vaccination information to be stored locally, as long as the vaccination certificate provider, such as TousAntiCovid, supports the service. And it specifies the giant in its documentation, without Google Pay installed, and promises it won’t be able to access this information because it will be stored locally. And, for added security, ” When a user wishes to access their COVID card, they will be asked for a password, PIN code or biometric method configured for their Android device. ยป.

The feature will roll out to the United States in the coming weeks, before rolling out to other countries. Interested health agencies should contact Google to access the program.
