United Kingdom Overseas Territory

London (OTS/PRNewswire)

We, the governments of the overseas territories of the United Kingdom, are custodians of internationally important habitats that span the globe from Antarctica to the Caribbean, from the South Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. Together with the UK, we have the fifth largest marine area in the world, over 90% of the UK’s biodiversity, and we are an essential part of the UK fulfilling its pledge to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030 . Climate change will have a profound impact on our environment, our economy and our society and if we do not act on it it will affect not only us but also our children and future generations. We need to strengthen global solidarity and coordinate our actions to overcome the climate crisis our communities are facing.

As coastal and insular communities, our economies depend on the maintenance of a healthy, sustainable marine and land environment. We are committed to taking measures to protect our fishery resources and to preserve our marine ecosystems and biodiversity wherever possible. Building on the good work already done abroad, we are ratifying the Coalition to Take Action Against the Harmful Effects of Plastic Pollution and Marine Litter, often caused by other countries polluting our shores.

Our biodiversity on land and sea not only serves our well-being, but also contributes to our uniqueness and our nature-based fight against climate change and is vital to those of us for whom tourism is an integral part of our economy. makes a significant contribution.

It is imperative that all nations prioritize their actions to prevent further accelerating man-made global warming and jointly commit to developing preventive measures to ensure that surface temperatures remain above 1.5 °C. Do not grow

We, as individual regions, develop regional measures to address the challenges specific to each of us, in order to sustainably use our oceans and natural resources for the benefit of today and future generations. Commit to working with the UK Government to Action to protect and restore our biodiversity.

As overseas territories, we at COP26 are committed to working with others in a spirit of cooperation to generate meaningful outcomes that will make a tangible difference in addressing the impacts of climate change in our regions.

*Note to editors: General elections are currently being held in the Falkland Islands; It is expected that the Falkland Islands will approve the pledge after the election.
