United Kingdom, Netherlands, Spain… After the explosion of cases, the share of Europe began to decline

Recent contamination figures in Europe show a slowdown in the spread of COVID-19. Europe had faced a rapid increase in the number of cases due to the delta (Indian) variant. It is thought to be 60% more contagious than the alpha version (British), which is itself more contagious than the initial strain of the virus. But, despite some health barriers being removed, new cases of coronavirus are slowing down or declining in some countries. Thus, the Netherlands recorded a 45% drop in new cases compared to the previous week. A glimmer of hope for France, where the pandemic continues to progress, albeit in a more moderate way in recent days, with a 97% increase in cases in a week.

In the United Kingdom, cases drop despite lifting of health restrictions

“Independence Day”, a day to remove health barriers in England, was observed on 19 July. Since that date, the British are no longer obliged to wear masks in closed spaces; Performance halls, stadiums and discos can accommodate their audience without limitation. This attitude had alarmed several researchers who asked Boris Johnson to postpone this deadline. However, as of 28 July, the country has seen a 31% drop in the number of cases, while about 55% of its population has been fully vaccinated.

In Spain, Catalonia is sounding the alarm

In Spain, where the virus is losing its impact, regions are deciding what health restrictions they can impose. For example, Catalonia, heavily affected by the Delta version, has restored a curfew from 1 hour to 6 a.m., closed beaches at night and limited meetings to 10 people. Catalonia’s regional government announced the suspension of non-urgent hospital and medical appointments on 24 July, as the number of cases begins to decline. Other regions such as the Canaries and Galicia now require a health pass to access some places. Of the countries with more than 10 million inhabitants, Spain has the largest share of its population, with 55.5% of Spaniards having a full vaccination program.

Health pass will be implemented in Italy soon

To counter the outbreak of the pandemic caused by the delta variant, Italy will institute a health pass from 6 August. The Italian “green pass” will be mandatory for access to closed spaces: bars, restaurants, swimming pools, sports halls, museums, cinemas, theaters and large gatherings. As the number of cases continues to rise, the head of government, Mario Draghi, reiterated the importance of vaccination. As of July 26, less than half of the population, 49%, had been fully vaccinated.

A significant drop in contamination in the Netherlands

The Netherlands faced the peak of the pandemic at the beginning of the month, with a 576% increase in the number of cases compared to the week before 12 July. This rapid growth, especially among the youth, has prompted the government to take further action. Festivals and events lasting more than 24 hours have been canceled until September 1. From 8 August, holidaymakers returning to the Netherlands will be required to submit a negative test or vaccination certificate. The reasons for the decline in cases are still unknown today, while 48% of the population was fully vaccinated on July 25 and the number of hospitalized patients is increasing. The peak of the pandemic seems to have passed in this country.

Circumstances and Remedies

In Germany, the wave of contamination lies. More than half of Germany’s population is vaccinated. Relatives of Angela Merkel are considering banning the unaffiliated, although nothing has been decided yet. Health passes are already in place in Denmark, Hungary, Austria, Luxembourg, Portugal and France. Portugal, which has 51% of its population fully vaccinated, has requested doses from other European countries to further intensify its vaccination campaign. She has already received 200,000 AstraZeneca doses purchased from Hungary on Tuesday after receiving 290,000 doses of the vaccine from Norway.

The Nordic country announced on Wednesday, for its part, that it was almost completely suspending its health restrictions in early August due to the spread of the delta variant. Norway saw an increase of about 30% of cases between 20 and 27 July, when 32% of its population was fully vaccinated by 25 July.

How might the situation develop in France?

Faced with a rapid increase in cases, the French government continues to promote vaccination. The milestone of 50% of the vaccinated population was crossed on 27 July and the extension of health passes to bars, restaurants, trains, planes, etc., should come into effect on 9 August, subject to a positive opinion from the Council. constitutional. According to the health ministry, 4.7 million injections were made last week “the best week since the start of the campaign”. The number of patients admitted to critical care has increased by 96% over the past week, but hospital stress remains low, with 19% of intensive care beds as of July 27. The incidence rate, the number of positive cases per 100,000 residents, continues to rise with the delta variant. This is 189 on the national average, or nearly four times the alert threshold (50).
