UN/Sahara: Support for the autonomy initiative resonates in the Security Council

Support for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative for the Final Resolution of the Territorial Dispute over the Sahara, presented by Morocco in April 2007, resonated strongly during a closed-door meeting of the Security Council held on Wednesday.

According to well-known and agreed diplomatic sources at the United Nations, Morocco’s autonomy initiative has been widely supported by many members of the Security Council. These members recognized that the initiative had a serious and credible basis capable of ending the territorial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, as enshrined in Security Council resolutions from 2007.

Similarly, Spain and Germany’s recent historical support for the autonomy initiative was largely taken up during these Council consultations.

During this meeting, members of the Security Council received a briefing from the personal envoy of the Secretary-General of the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, on his first visit to the region, as well as from the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and the head of MINURSO, Alexander Ivanko, who spoke via videoconference. talked to.

According to the same diplomatic sources, members of the Security Council strongly and unanimously supported the UN political process to reach a political, realistic, pragmatic, permanent and compromise solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue on the exclusive basis of security resolutions. Councils since 2007, specifically 2602, were adopted on 29 October.

In this context, they reaffirmed their support for the efforts of the personal envoy of the UN SG to restart the political process of the United Nations. A strong and clear call was made to resume the Round Table process as soon as possible, which Algeria continues to resist in an added challenge to the international community.

It should be remembered that Resolution 2602 quoted Algeria 5 times, ordering it to engage in the Round Table Process throughout its duration, in the spirit of realism and compromise, with a view to bringing it to a successful conclusion, thus Algeria As a sacred place, it is the main party of this territorial dispute.

Council members also welcomed Morocco’s full cooperation with MINURSO, including the vaccination of members of this mission as part of the national vaccination campaign against COVID-19.

During this meeting, members of the Security Council expressed their serious concerns about the “Polisario” abdication of the armistice, violations of military agreements, and obstruction of MINURSO’s activities, and freedom of movement for its military. supervisor

He called on the “Polisario” to respect the ceasefire, to refrain from any provocation, and to curb its dangerous obstacles to the implementation of Minerso’s armistice supervision mandate, in particular his patrols. and withholding the supply of military observers, as detailed in the SG’s final report to the Security Council last October.

According to these same sources, the meeting took place in a calm atmosphere, thus promoting the best conditions for the implementation of the mandate of the personal envoy of the UN SG, pursuant to Resolution 2602.
