UK sees diplomatic boycott of Beijing Winter Olympics as human rights protest

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is considering a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics in Beijing next year to protest China’s human rights record, the Times reported on Saturday. According to the newspaper, an “active discussion” is underway within the government, with Foreign Minister Liz Truss declaring herself in favor of the boycott. Under one option, the British minister would not attend the Games, although China’s ambassador does, the Times said.

Reportedly, five Tory politicians have written to Johnson urging him to ban all official diplomatic representation of Britain at the February Winter Olympics.

President Joe Biden confirmed on Thursday that the United States is considering a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics.
