Turkey welcomes political agreement between al-Burhan and Hamdok in Sudan

AA / Ankara

Turkey welcomed the political agreement signed between the army chief, Abdelfattah al-Burhan, and the head of the transitional government, Abdullah Hamdok, to end the crisis in the country.

This has come to light from a statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Sunday.

In its statement, the ministry said: “We are pleased that the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan, Lieutenant General Abdelfattah al-Burhan, and Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok have agreed to return to the transition process as part of the Constitutional Declaration, and That Mr Hamdok resume his works.”

The statement stressed that Ankara will stand by Sudan.

He said Turkey attaches great importance to the maintenance of peace and stability in this sensitive phase of Sudan, taking into account the aspirations of all sections of the Sudanese people.

Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok resumed his post in his Khartoum office today after signing a political deal with army chief Abdelfattah al-Burhan.

Sudan has been going through a serious crisis since 25 October, when al-Burhan declared a state of emergency, dissolving the Sovereignty Council and the Transitional Cabinet. He also sacked governors following the arrests of party leaders, ministers and senior officials, while dismissing these measures, describing the continued protests as a “military coup”.

The political settlement aims to end the crisis, with intense international pressure and continued internal opposition to a return to civilian rule.
