The woman confirmed that the driver was killed in a horrific accident on the M8

A woman has died after a horrific attack on the M8 this morning.

She was the only female driver in the car at the time of the tragic accident on the carriageway east of Shots, North Lanarkshire, after 4 p.m.

The roadbound is closed between four and five for police investigation.

The record said earlier today that there was a fatality in the accident but now it has been confirmed that the casualty was a woman.

The closure caused traffic chaos with long tailbacks throughout the day and it is not yet known when the road will reopen.

Chief Inspector Darren Fowlds said: “Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the family and friends of the person who lost their lives in the tragedy.

“We understand that the closure of a major route has created significant obstacles for motorists and we thank them for their patience as we continue to respond to this serious incident.

“I would ask the police to contact any driver who has witnessed the incident using the M8 earlier this morning, or who may have dashcam footage of the incident.”

Traffic Scotland has reported long queues on the road, urging motorists to avoid the route as much as possible, as heavy traffic is unbalanced.

Another serious accident occurred on the M8 after a fatal crash this morning.

At around 4.30 am, a lorry and a truck collided at Chapelhall at Junction 6, causing a traffic jam.

The front end and windscreen were completely destroyed - a wrecked traffic management truck was pictured after the HGV was torn off.
