Leonids are some of the fastest and brightest meteors and – if the sky is clear – those who look up at the sky can see up to 15 shooting stars per hour.
Here’s what you need to know about it
What is Leonidas?
Leonids come from the left particle of the comet 55p / Temple-Total.
These fireballs come out of Leo’s constellation.
The comets – which take 33 years to orbit the sun – are closer to Earth, making visions even better.
The last time this happened was in 2009, when they recorded an astonishing 500 shoots per hour.
The next such event is predicted over the next 13 years.
How long is the meteor shower tonight?
Most meteor showers are best seen after midnight and before dawn when the sky is in their darkness.
What does NASA say?
NASA advised: “Leonids are best seen starting at midnight local time. Look for an area far away from the city or street lights.
“Come prepared with sleeping bags, blankets or lawn chairs for winter temperatures.
“Move yourself to the east, keep your back flat and look up at the sky as much as possible.
“In less than 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adjust and you will begin to see meteors.
“Be patient – the show will run until dawn, so you have plenty of time to catch a glimpse.”
How to see Leonids
This particular celestial phenomenon is called Leonids because the shooting stars show “radiation” from the Leo star.
You’ll want to look to Leo for the best chance of finding meteorites, although they can appear at any moment in the night sky.
Meteor spots should be viewed from vantage point with as little light contamination as possible; Undoubtedly their outlook in rural areas will be clearer.
Weather also plays an important role, and cloudy nights can reduce your chances of finding any meteorites, so keep an eye on local weather forecasts.
When is the next meteor shower?
If you miss the Leonid Meteor shower tonight, two more showers are scheduled before the end of the year.
The Geminids will be at the top from December 13-1 December, and the Ursids will be at the top from December 21-22.
