The leaked documents show the Scottish Government proposing an extended Christmas school holiday after the rules were relaxed.

The leaked document contains detailed proposals from the Scottish Government to extend the Christmas school holidays to January.

The two-page Kasala document states that students will not have to return to school until at least January 11 to stop the spread of the virus after the festival gathering.

Council leaders debated the proposal proposed by government ministers at a meeting of the Covid-19 Education Recovery Group on Thursday, November 26th.

School students may be asked to participate in distance learning

Council leaders were asked their thoughts on the 2020 festival break, which took place between 18 December and 11 January.

The document recommended that schools move to a temporary distance learning system after more than five days of strict coronavirus rules were relaxed in December.

Scottish ministers are expected to announce their decision next week

It read: “The Scottish Government is looking for national growth during the Christmas holidays from 16 December 2020 to 11 January 2021, with schools closed or on the basis of the temporary introduction of distance learning.

“Scottish government officials have indicated that the objectives of the increase will be to ensure that school staff are not involved in communication during the Christmas period.

“The extension will act as a‘ break ’after the widespread relaxation of restrictions during the Christmas period.

Concerns have also been raised about proposed changes to the memo signed by Kasla’s policy director for Matthew Sweeney for children and young people.

The Kasala memo was passed on the daily record

They included provisions for emergency child care for key staff and the time required to properly place distance learning opportunities if that option was selected.

The memo reads: “The Scottish Government has raised the initial response of the officers, Soles and ADES to consider the following issues.

“No modeling needs to be understood about the impact of clinical counseling and the broad relaxation of restrictions on Christmas on school staff and students.

“Clarity about broad restrictions and level connections in the context of school closures.

“Evidence to date from the Scottish Government indicates that schools are at lower risk of infection.

“This proposal could have an impact on open schools for future consideration, especially for trade unions.

“There will be no opportunity to care for emergency children because it was previously provided by school staff, and so it has an impact on key staff and vulnerable children and young people.

The memo said Scottish ministers would make a decision next week

“It is unclear whether primary education and child care services will be discontinued during this period

“Considering the potential loss of learning, especially in the context of exams.

“The need to ensure that resources for free school meals, etc., can be met and the need to ensure that.

“If there is a need to move to distance education, local authorities and schools need time to prepare.

“Practical fraud, including leave entitlements, potential fraud during the 195 contracts and pensions, other school staff’s status, transportation, agreement to clean contracts in the initial period of the lockdown, without any call to do any harm to staff providers.”

The memo said the final decision on extending the proposed holiday would be made by Nicola Sturgeon and other Scottish ministers next week.

A spokesman for the Scottish Government said: “Questions have been raised about the timing of the school holidays, especially as some schools break up in the run-up to Christmas.

“The issue was discussed at a meeting of the Education Recovery Group today, where there were mixed views and no decision was reached.”
