The Taliban prohibit Afghan women from playing cricket or any other sport. Ahmadullah Wasik, deputy head of the Taliban’s culture committee, told Australia’s SBS News that sport is not considered important to women.
Wasik talked about cricket, among other things – an exhibition match is planned soon between the Afghan and Australian men’s teams. “I don’t think women should be allowed to play cricket because there is no need for women to play cricket,” she said.
According to Wasik, during sports, women can find themselves in a situation where their face and body are not covered. “Islam doesn’t allow women to be seen this way. This is the age of the media, so there will be photos and videos and people are watching it.” The Taliban leader said that Islam does not allow women to play cricket or any other sport where they can show themselves too much.
According to the Taliban, the Test match between the Afghan and Australian men’s teams will continue. Whether this will happen in practice or not remains to be seen. According to the International Cricket Board (ICC), a country must have both a men’s and a women’s team to be a full member, and only full members are allowed to play Test matches.
The European Union
Women are also not included in the provisional government formed by the Taliban on Tuesday; Also, according to reports, the Taliban has abolished the Ministry of Women’s Affairs. It also includes people who have been banned by the European Union, or who are wanted by the US on terrorism charges. The European Union said on Wednesday that this government goes against the extremists’ earlier promises.
“This does not look like the inclusive and representative formation of the rich ethnic and religious diversity in Afghanistan that we had hoped to see and which the Taliban promised,” an EU spokesman said. The 27 EU countries want to talk to the Taliban under five conditions. An inclusive, representative government is one of those situations.
