Swansea City tracking Coventry City’s Welsh starlet George Thomas - reports

Swansea City are reportedly leading the race among several Premier League clubs to sign highly-rated George Thomas from Coventry City.

Media reports have indicated that midfielder Thomas, 20, is being monitored by the Swans as well as 2015/2016 champions Leicester City and newly-promoted Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion.

Thomas has impressed at the Sky Blues, despite their relegation to League 2 last season, and scored the winning goal in their EFL Trophy triumph over Oxford United in April. He also starred in the Toulon Tournament with the unbeaten Wales Under-20’s, where he scored twice. Thomas was also named in the prestigious team of the tournament.

The Independent report that Swansea may have to pay around £500k in compensation for Thomas, who is out of contract this summer. It is also believed that the Swans will seek to loan him out for the season to further test his credentials.

If a loan fails to materialise, which is unlikely given probable Championship-level suitors eager to take him on - then Thomas could spend time with Swansea’s successful under-23’s side, who were Premier League Division Two champions last season.

Despite their recent footballing struggles, Coventry City have become famed in recent years for a production line of talent. Both Chris Kirkland and Daniel Sturridge spent time in the youth ranks of the Sky Blues while current prospects include not only Thomas but Welsh defender Cian Harries, who played in a trial match for Liverpool under-23’s last season.

The signing of Thomas, who scored 5 goals in 28 league games last season, could represent the future of Swansea City along with other hot prospects such as Welsh winger Daniel James and Scotland under-21 striker Ollie McBurnie.
