Sony joins Samsung and LG with blockbuster upgrades to your 4K TV

Sony Arch is following in the footsteps of rival Samsung by introducing a blockbuster feature designed to bring more content into your living room. The Japanese company is launching the popular Apple TV app across some of its most popular televisions, which means owners can watch all their iTunes purchases and rentals, as well as stream the latest exclusive boxsets and movies from the Apple TV + subscription service.

The Netflix was launched last year and features movies such as The Morning Show, Watch, Defending Jacob, Ted Lasso, as well as Greyhound, The Banker, Boys State and Beastie Boys Story. For those who have bought an iPhone in the last twelve months, Apple offers a year-long TV subscription. For the rest of us it costs 99 4.99 a month.

Until now, they would need a separate streaming device such as an Apple TV box or a Fire TV stick to tune in to the Apple TV app on Sony televisions, but now you can get everything straight to the home screen without the need for extra accessories.

This means that some Sony Smart TV owners will now be able to instantly browse the Apple TV app to buy or rent more than 100,000 more movies and TV shows, including titles and Dolby Atmas available in 4K HDR. Sony has said that the Apple TV app will start rolling out in Europe on Sony’s XH90 series today with a software update.

Interestingly, since Sony uses Android TV to power its smart TV sets – Apple has explicitly created its video on-demand application to work with the Google-developed operating system. However, the Apple TV app will not be available for download on your phone from the Google Play Store. Instead, as mentioned above, it will appear in a software update for the set.

Since Apple TV clearly works with the Android TV operating system (Samsung TVs use the South Korean firm’s own Tizen operating system), like Philips, Hisense we saw the app in the Play Store and could be available on other Android TVs possible and others. Not only that, but it means Nvidia Shield and Google TV owners can add the Chromecast Apple TV app to their homescreen.

There’s no saying it’s still happening, but fingers crossed rivals Apple and Google could resolve their differences and get the app in the Play Store for all app developers.

The Apple TV app will then launch on Sony’s selected 2018 TV models and most 2019 and 2020 models by the end of the year.

“Through Apple TV +, we’re presenting all the original stories from the best, brightest and most creative minds, and we know viewers will find their new favorite show or movie on our service,” said Jack Van Amberg, Apple’s head of worldwide video. “Each Apple TV + original provides its own unique story, new perspective and powerful message – to convey the entertainment, connection and inspiration of culture conversations.”

In addition to the Apple TV app, it should also be noted that the selected Sony TVs support AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, allowing Apple users to easily play videos and other content directly from their iPhone, iPad or Mac to their smart TV.

HomeKit lets customers control Sony’s smart TVs easily and securely by using the Home app or asking Siri on their Apple device.
