Canon Canon RF announces 70-200mm f / 4L IS USM – the world’s shortest and lightest 70-200mm f / 4 lens collapses at just 119mm at the same size as a soda can!
Like the Trinity replica of the Canon RF 70-200mm f / 4L IS USM, the Canon RF 70-200mm f / 2.8L IS USM is a variable length optic that expands as you zoom in on your 200mm focal length. In its full extension, it is almost the same length as the Canon EF70-200mm f / 4L IS II USM – the bright 2018 DSLR lens that effectively replaces this new mirrorless optic.
The new RF lenses are 32% smaller and lighter than the EF version – “a size and weight loss that was previously impossible”, according to Canon – weighing just 695 grams compared to its predecessor 780g.
The RF 70-200mm f / 4L is small, but basically the same size and weight as the Canon RF 24-105mm f / 4L IS USM – and it uses the same 77mm filter thread, making a very good number of associate lenses for them. Photographers are looking for light travel while covering a large focal range.
This second lens (after the RF 70-200mm f / 2.8L) features Canon’s floating mechanism dual nano USM system. It delivers high performance at high speeds that are both quiet and controllable, high speed AF which is ideal for both still and video – and for later, this system dramatically suppresses focus breathing.
An image stable lens, it will provide five stops of compensation if used in non-IBIS firms such as Canon EOS R and Canon EOS RP. When mounted on the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6, it offers 7.5 stops of stabilization.
As an L-series lens it is fully weather sealed with vibration and shock-resistant construction. Like Canon’s other “big white” shots, it has head-painted paint, a fluorine coating on the front component, and – like all Canon RF lenses – a customizable control ring.
The Canon RF 70-200mm f / 4L IS USM goes on sale in December and will carry a retail price of retail 1,699.99 (US and Australian prices to follow).
