Saudi Air Defense intercepted eight stranded drones launched to target civilians in Saudi Arabia, with the coalition calling for support for legitimacy in Yemen.
Al-Arabiya news channel quoted coalition sources as saying, “The Houthi militia attempted to target the two universities of Jijan and Narjan.” The coalition, which released pictures of drone interception, said that the Houthi militia launched a ballistic missile that fell in Al Javaf province.
The drone strikes occurred a few days after Riyadh launched a new ceasefire initiative in Yemen. Recently, the Iranian-backed Houthis have stepped up their drone and missile attacks against Saudi Arabia. Yemen has been in the embrace of a war between the pro-government and the Houthis, who have controlled several governors in the country, including Sanaa, since September 2014. An Arab military coalition led by Saudi Arabia has been supporting military forces ever since. According to the United Nations, March 2015 faced a severe war, which created a “serious humanitarian crisis”.
