Sailing – Germany’s Olympic sailors receive two World Cup medals

Musnah / Oman (DPA) – Olympic sailors from Germany won silver and bronze at the World Championships in Oman.

In the championships for the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17, Tim Fischer and Fabian Graf (Norddeutscher Regatta Verein/Veren Seglerhaus am Wannsee) finished second on Sunday and missed out on the world title by only two points. After bronze at the 2018 World Cup, he won his second World Cup medal. For German 49er sailors who have never won a World Championship title, it was the sixth World Championship medal at this 25th World Championship since 1997.

Olympic 3rd Paul Kohlhoff/Elika Stuhlmer at Nacra 17 finished third in the World Cup final. The Kiel Yacht Club pair won the first World Championship medal for the German Sailing Team at the Ninth World Championship for the Olympic Catamaran on Wings. Olympic runner-up John Gimson / Anna Burnett (Great Britain) defends her 2020 World Championship title in Oman. Silver in the Nacra 17 went to Italy’s three-time junior world champion Gianluigi Ugolini / Maria Giubilli.

26-year-old helmsman Fischer and his one-year younger crew member Graf were eight points ahead of Dutch chasers in the double-value 49er final of the top ten after the main round. In the final, however, he had an early start, which had to be corrected by turning Fischer/Graf back to the starting line. The subsequent race to catch up with seventh place was not enough to stop the victorious Dutchman Bart Lambrix/Floris van de Werken on their title course. Dane Fredrik Rask and Jakob Priech Jensen took bronze at the World Cup.
