Ronald Koeman chasing Welsh veteran defender James Collins - reports

Ronald Koeman is believed to be interested in bringing in experienced Welsh defender James Collins from Premier League rivals West Ham United.

Koeman is keen on the 33 year-old Welshman as Everton target a Champions League place ahead of next season.

The centre-back will offer a host of Premier League experience, having played for both Aston Villa and West Ham United - he’s had two separate spells at the Hammers, and has made over 150 appearances for the London based club.

And according to The Sun, the Everton boss is keen to bolster his defence by bringing in Collins to add to his defensive ranks, and the £2 million figure has been floated around as the figure to secure the defender’s services.

The veteran defender saw his opportunities limited at the London Stadium last season, and featured on 22 occasions for the Hammers.

Collins started his career in South Wales with the Bluebirds, and spend five years at Ninian Park, making a total of 66 appearances, and scoring a total of three goals.

The Welshman can be a handful at the other end of the pitch due to his aerial presence as well, and a has a reputation for being a tough tackling, no nonsense defender.

The Newport born centre-back also has 51 Welsh caps to his name - and first made his appearance 2004, against Norway. The 33 year-old also has three international goals to his name.

With the experience he has at his disposal, he can be a useful player to have in the dressing room as well as on the pitch, however, at times he does have the tendency to lack discipline.

With the Toffees intent on strengthening their squad this summer, Collins could become their eighth signing, but they will face stiff competition from Crystal Palace and Stoke City in order to sign the long-serving defender.

Everton have also shown strong interest in Icelandic playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson throughout the summer transfer window so far.
