Scorers: Aaron Ramsey (Pen 35′), Aleksandar Mitrovic (73′)
Wales preserved their World Cup qualifying hopes after taking a point from group-leaders Serbia on Sunday evening.
Chris Coleman’s men were forced to settle for a point in Belgrade despite taking a first-half lead.
Aaron Ramsey dispatched a first-half penalty with a classy chip to put his team in front before the break.
But Wales’ hopes of taking all three points in Belgrade were dashed by Aleksandar Mitrovic who - as he did in Cardiff - popped up with an equaliser against Chris Coleman’s men.
The draw leaves Wales in an almost identical position to before tonight’s fixtures, four points behind Serbia and Ireland, locked on the same points as Austria.
Wales take on Austria at home in their next fixture, while Ireland travel to Georgia and Serbia take on Moldova.
Match Report
The visitors begun the clash the better of the two sides despite the scrappy opening in front of a passionate Serbian crowd.
Wales failed to create any chances of note, however, and Serbia would grow into the first half, slowly taking control.
That was until Aaron Ramsey capitalized on a goalkeeping error from Wladimir Stojkovic who came storming out of his area with the ball.
Ramsey managed to pinch the ball from the Nottingham Forest keeper, before being pulled down on his route back towards the Serbia goal - a yellow card was soon brandished.
Wales received a free-kick on the by-line and it was to get better when Sam Vokes was pulled back in the process of heading the set-piece.
A spot-kick for the visitors, and just what they needed in a scrappy and physical game.
Aaron Ramsey stepped up to take the penalty and found the top corner with a stylish Panenka-like chip, sending Stojkovic the wrong way.
Wales made it to half-time with a one-goal lead despite having to batter away a number of Serbian balls into the box - a situation Chris Coleman would have dreamed of.
The second half would see Serbia continue from where they left off in the first, firing balls into the Wales box, and stretching play from one wing to the other.
Wales did have a chance in between the onslaught, Sam Vokes connecting with a head from another Joe Ledley free-kick, but it drifted just over the crossbar.
Serbia continued their dominance and Joe Allen paid the price from stopping one particular move, receiving a yellow card, he will subsequently miss the Austria fixture in September after reaching the limit.
It would get worse for Wales in the 73rd minute when a slick move saw Nemanja Gudelj peel off the back of his man, before sending Mitrovic on-goal with a superb back-heal.
The Newcastle United striker slotted past Wayne Hennessey with ease, scoring his second equaliser against Wales during this campaign.
Wales pressed late on, finding gaps as Serbia searched for a winner, but long-range efforts was as good as it got in the dying minutes.
Both teams had to be content with a draw and Wales will certainly be the happy of the two.
Man of the Match - Aaron Ramsey
Ramsey arrived in Serbia on the back of terrific end-of-season form with Arsenal, having netted the winner in the FA Cup final.
And he continued it in Belgrade, providing Wales with that extra yard of pace needed on a difficult evening without star man Gareth Bale.
Wales needed someone to bring them out of the defensive game, and Ramey did that, as well as scoring an excellent penalty.
Final Word
This was always going to be a very tough game for Wales, being in Serbia where there are haunting memories, and without Gareth Bale.
A number of injuries also caused problems, limiting Chris Coleman in his substitutions.
Serbia are a very good side and Wales would have taken a point before they kicked a ball in Belgrade.
They did well to take the lead against the run of play, but ultimately Serbia deserved more than a point, and Wales can be happy to take home just the one.
It leaves Wales still in with a chance, although they will need to win at least three of the remaining four games.
It could have been all over after tonight’s game, which makes this a good result all round.
