Newport County lost 2-0 to Barry Town United in their latest pre-season friendly test, but what are the things Mike Flynn learnt about his side from the defeat?
Barry’s fruitful attack prove too much to handle for County’s defence
It has to be noted, Mike Flynn gave a chance to a whole host of trialists, but many failed to impress at Jenner Park.
Former Merthyr Town striker Kayne McLaggon at times proved to be too hot to handle as his two first-half goals gave Barry Town United a much-needed confidence boost going into the Welsh Premier League season on the 13th of August.
This was a good test for the Exiles against a strong Barry time, but you can fully expect Flynn to put out a stronger XI when his side travels to Sixfields on Saturday.
Defensive lapses cost County
Ultimately what cost the Exiles in this latest pre-season friendly was their defensive frailties at the back in the first-half.
The Barry front-line were given far too much time and space on the ball and it cost Mike Flynn’s side on the night, and there is no doubt he will want his side to respond on Saturday, against Justin Edinburgh’s Northampton Town.
Flynn returns home
Besides from the football on the night, it must have been emotional for Flynn, who returned to Jenner Park, 16 years after scoring on that historic night when Barry Town defeated FC Porto 3-1 in Europe.
