Newport County draw Southend United in the first round of the Carabao Cup

Newport County will take on Southend United in the first round of next season’s Carabao Cup.

The Exiles will face League One club Southend in the first round of the League Cup next season following this afternoon’s draw in Bangkok.

County were one of the 18 unseeded teams placed into the South section of the draw, with Premier League teams coming into play in the second round, and those top-flight teams in Europe entering at the third.

Newport will likely have to play the tie away despite being drawn at home due to the installation of a new DESSO pitch at Valley parade which will see them play all fixtures away until August 26th.

Last season saw Newport drop out of the League Cup in the first round after a narrow 3-2 defeat to League One club MK Dons.

The furthest County have been in the league Cup is the 3rd round, that was back in the 1962/63 season.

Mike Flynn and his men will be hoping to change that disappointing statistic, starting with a tough first round tie against Southend United.

Ties will take place on the week commencing August 7th.
