New ‘Everest’ movie: Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor, Sam Heughan and Mark Strong will be on Everest.

According to ‘Deadline’, the trio was signed for a new adventure film, in which ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ filmmaker Doug Lyman will direct. Sheldon Turner is writing the script for the film, which will be shot in both the UK and Italy from January next year.

The film is inspired by Jeffrey Archer’s novel Paths of Glory. Set in 1921, it revolves around George Mallory (McGregor), who is selected by Arthur Hinks (Strong) of the Royal Geographic Society to climb the heights of the previously untamed Mount Everest. For Mallory and his eccentric Australian rival George Finch (Hughan), the challenge has nothing to do with patriotism, but is a unique test of its own.

Mallory was involved in three British expeditions to the Mount Everest region in the 1920s. Mallory’s real life journey ended mysteriously as he died during his third expedition to Everest and it is not known whether he ever reached the summit.

Liman and Jennifer Klein produce the film, which has long been a passionate project for the filmmaker.
