The British government on Monday launched the ‘India-UK Sports Week’ to celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, the incredibly vibrant bridge between the two countries.
From February 21-27, a series of talks on and off the pitch will highlight the shared love of the sport and the opportunities it creates for the people of both countries.
The Sports Week will showcase the best of sports featuring Indian and British celebrities reflecting on their own journey. It will be attended by Olympic and Commonwealth Games gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, cricketer Dinesh Karthik, world para-badminton champion Mansi Joshi, tennis legend Vijay Amritraj and Indian rugby captain Vahbiz Bharucha among others.
British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis said: “The UK and India share a love for sport. Cricket, football, tennis, badminton and hockey bring us together. Sports Week is a celebration of this bond and our living bridge. I look forward to more activities over the year as India celebrates 75 years of independence and the UK is hosting the Commonwealth Games and the final game of the Test series.
This week’s activity leads to the ‘India-UK Together 2022’ initiative. The joint initiative, led by the British Council and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, will be launched later this year. It will celebrate the unique bonds that can help shape the future of both countries through a diverse program of activities – highlighting the strong cultural ties between the British and Indians – sports, education, the arts and much more.
As two great democracies, India and the UK share a vision for empowering the next generation of leaders.
