Through the official Algerian press agency, the Polisario Front has claimed that it has entered into an agreement for the post of Sweden’s Staffan de Mistura as the new envoy of the United Nations to the Sahara.

The announcement was made by Abdelkadar Taleb Omar, the representative of the separatists in Algiers, specifying that the Polisario Front had reached its agreement on 29 April. The name of Staffan de Mistura has not yet been officially announced by the United Nations.

Staffan de Mistura, a former UN mediator in Syria, was proposed by the UN Secretary-General as the fifth UN envoy in the Sahara after James Baker, Christopher Ross, Peter Van Walsen and Horst Köhler.
