More issues arise at New York Community Bancorp, but big bank trade remains unaffected

The Homestretch Update: Wall Street Sees Volatility as Markets Rally and Pull Back

The CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer recently released the Homestretch, an afternoon update for the last hour of trading on Wall Street. As the trading day came to a close, markets initially rallied with nearly every S & P sector in the green. However, gains were given back after New York Community Bancorp sought a cash infusion, causing some volatility in the market.

New York Community Bancorp ultimately received an equity investment of over $1 billion, which helped stabilize the situation. Meanwhile, Wells Fargo made a new 52-week high and emerged as the top-performing big bank in 2024. On the other hand, Morgan Stanley saw its shares trade lower after experiencing a rise on Monday with no news to support the increase, prompting a trimming of positions.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reiterated that there are no imminent rate cuts on the horizon. However, the NYCB report caused Treasury yields to dip slightly. DuPont also crossed above $70 following an upbeat note by Fermium Research on the recovery of the semiconductor business.

In the cybersecurity sector, CrowdStrike trashed Palo Alto Networks on an earnings call, causing their shares to sit out a cybersecurity rally. Looking ahead, earnings after the market close should be relatively quiet, with Kroger, Burlington Stores, American Eagle Outfitters, and BJ’s Wholesale set to report on Thursday morning.

On Thursday evening, Broadcom and Costco will release their earnings reports. Additionally, the non-farm payroll report for February is expected to come out on Friday morning. Subscribers to the CNBC Investing Club receive trade alerts before Jim Cramer makes a trade, subject to terms and conditions.
