Libya’s High Electoral Commission (HNEC) on Wednesday recommended the postponement of the presidential election in Libya until January 24, 2022, after consultation with parliament.
“After consultation with Parliament, the High Election Commission proposes to postpone the first round of elections (President, Editor’s Note) until January 24, 2022. In order to adopt necessary measures to remove obstacles in the electoral process, Parliament will be responsible for this”. HNEC said in a statement.
“The appeals and appeals phase was a dangerous turning point for the electoral process. It was indeed the point where all efforts aimed at bringing this historic deadline for ideas beyond the control of the people in charge of the process to a successful conclusion,” said the electoral authority.
Among these considerations, the HNEC specifically cited “inadequate electoral legislation relating to the role of justice in electoral appeals and disputes”. Earlier in the day, a parliamentary committee responsible for overseeing the presidential election declared it “impossible” to hold the election on 24 December, a major hurdle in the transition process to kick the North African country out of the country. ,
The Commission’s findings were made public after several days of waiting for an announcement to postpone the elections, in the absence of adequate preparation and against the backdrop of insurmountable disagreements between rival camps.
