Ismail Omar Guelleh Think Again – Mafrique

According to provisional official results, Djibouti-Ville – outgoing President Ismail Omar Guelleh was removed from the post of Head of the Republic of Djibouti on Friday 9 April.

“President Ismail Omar Guelleh receives 167,535 votes, or 98.58% (…) These are the provisional results of the presidential election on April 9, 2021”On Friday to Saturday night on public television RTD, Moum Ahmed Cheek, Minister of the Interior, announced.

President Guleh, 73, was running for a fifth and final term against 56-year-old businessman Zakaria Ismail Farah, who recently entered politics.

Farah had received less than 5,000 votes, with the minister saying the final results would be imminent. “Granted by the Constitutional Council”.

Earlier in the evening on Friday, Prime Minister Abdulakadar Kamil Mohammed announced on Facebook “Participation will exceed 77%”, Compared to 68% in 2016.

Some 215,000 registered voters (out of a total population of 990,000) were invited to visit one of the 529 polling stations in the country, mostly located in the capital city of Djibouti-Ville.

Mr. Guelleh’s last four terms were particularly marked by the growth of the economy, which was based on the development of ports and logistics structures.

Djibouti, a strategic country on the Horn of African continent, opposite one of the world’s busiest sea lanes on the borders of Africa and Arabia, has become a commercial intersection. It also hosts important foreign military bases (United States, France, China, Japan).
