Though fans thought they were bidding farewell to the iconic character of Tyler Perry in 2019 Funeral of a Medea Family, it turns out that America’s favorite matriarch still has a lot to say. Thus, Netflix has made way for an entirely new adventure. a homecoming mediaWhich arrives on the streaming platform on February 24.
Family reunions are once again the order of the day, but this time it’s the occasion of Madea’s great-grandson, Tim (Brandon Black). dear blondes) when her best friend Davy (Isha Bleeker, hostess) comes along for the ride, he is attracted to another powerful alien matriarch: Agnes Brown. Brown’s role is played by none other than Brendan O’Carroll, who made the role a sensation in Britain thanks to the BBC series. Mrs. Brown’s Boys,
Perry spoke screen rent Medea’s post-retirement debut allowed her to tackle bigger issues, as well as have fun on set with co-star O’Carroll.
I never thought Maddie and Agnes Brown would reunite on a screen, and now I can’t help but imagine it. I love this pair so much. How did it first come to you and how did you realize it?
Tyler Perry: I was doing a movie called Brain on Fire, and director Gerard [Barrett] said, “Have you heard of Mrs. Brown?” I was like, “No, I didn’t.” He sent me the clip and I was blown away. So, I reached out to Brendan and said, “We have to do something together.”
Five years later, the project appeared. I was like, “Okay, here we go,” and it was by far the funniest shoot I’ve ever had with anyone as Madia. The man is funny. He is a genius.
Medea actually explores issues incredibly relevant and topical today, like sexuality and police brutality, that affect not only black communities, but our entire nation. Was it the stage or time that allowed you to deal with it?
Tyler Perry: It’s both. This is the time, this is the platform, and this is the opportunity to talk to the whole world at once. I didn’t want to do something that was just a silly comedy without letting people think – I never want to do that. It was a time when we could put everything together and have a conversation.
I hope this will make people laugh and open up the conversation so that they can be turned to healing.
You have a lot of family members in your pieces and you are always inventing new ones. Then in the movies we have more family members who are sometimes rearranged differently. How do you keep them in your mind? What is the continuation of Mediverse?
Tyler Perry: Look, I don’t know. I realized it was like my own family. We have a lot of extended people who come every year for family reunions. And for me, ever since I’ve been Tyler Perry, it’s really the new family members that are coming out of the woodwork.
Everyone has their own problems and their own problems, so I just realized that a lot of families are really extended – and they are much bigger than we thought. And its huge.
While I’m so glad you brought back Madea, I’m really excited for a jazzman’s blues, I know it’s probably been working for even longer. How was that experience and what can we expect from the film?
Tyler Perry: The best experience I’ve ever had filmmaking was A Jazzman Blues. 27 years of preparation. I can’t wait for it to come out. It’s also on Netflix and I’m very excited about it.
Brendan mentioned that the two of you can travel in 2023. What other projects of MEDIA can I work on?
Tyler Perry: [laughs] Brendan is such a prankster that you never know when he is telling the truth. But I’m taking it one step at a time, because it’s such an overwhelming time in my life, with business and career and everything – and with my son.
I’m only taking it one step at a time, so we’ll see what happens next.
Homecoming a Maddy by Tyler Perry Will land on Netflix on February 25.
