Insider Wales Sport: The Health Supplement Linked to 5 Deaths in Japan – What Consumers Should Know

In a recent development out of Japan, red yeast products have been recalled after being linked to at least five deaths. These products, containing benikoji derived from mold and a chemical compound called puberulic acid, have raised concerns about the safety of dietary supplements in the U.S. market.

Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. is currently investigating a possible link between their red yeast products and the fatalities. These products have also been exported to other countries, including China and Taiwan. However, no products containing benikoji have been recalled in the U.S. thus far, and no health issues have been reported in connection to these supplements.

Experts suggest that similar issues could arise in products outside of Japan, as the FDA does not verify the listed ingredients in dietary supplements. ConsumerLab found that 30% of red yeast rice products tested contained citrinin, a chemical linked to kidney toxicity. This raises concerns about the difficulty for consumers to verify the ingredients in their supplements.

In light of these findings, consumers are being urged to consult with their doctors before taking any dietary supplements. Additionally, caution is advised when choosing these products, as the quality can vary significantly among brands. The FDA has not yet responded to requests for comment on the situation.

As the investigation into the red yeast products continues, it is important for consumers to be aware of the potential risks associated with dietary supplements. By taking the necessary precautions and consulting with healthcare professionals, individuals can ensure their safety when using these products.
