Houston Astros’ First Baseman José Abreu Optioned to Spring Training Complex
Houston Astros first baseman José Abreu, a three-time All-Star and the 2020 AL MVP, has been struggling at the plate this season. As a result, the team has made the decision to option Abreu to their spring training complex in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Abreu has been in a slump, recording just seven hits in 71 at-bats and striking out 18 times. After a conversation between Abreu, the coaching staff, and the front office, Abreu gave his consent to be optioned. There is no set timetable for his return to the majors, but it is expected to be an extended stay in Florida.
The move was not official until Wednesday, so the Astros played Tuesday’s game a player short. Prior to Abreu’s optioning, the Astros had been struggling at the first base position, with a .390 OPS from their first basemen.
With the team already 10 games below .500, the Astros could not afford to wait for Abreu to turn things around at the major league level. Despite his struggles, Abreu’s contract with the Astros is worth $58.5 million over three years, making it difficult to cut ties with him early in the season.
Abreu did not report to Minute Maid Park on Tuesday and was unavailable for comment. Fans will have to wait and see how the team performs without their star first baseman in the lineup as they try to improve their standing in the league.
