University of Michigan Investigating Confrontation Between Basketball Coaches

The University of Michigan is currently investigating an alleged confrontation between head basketball coach Juwan Howard and strength and conditioning coach Jon Sanderson. The incident, which occurred on December 7, has led to a human resources claim being filed by Sanderson.

This is not the first time Howard’s employment has come under scrutiny. Due to a previous altercation in February 2022, Howard is already under a “zero-tolerance policy.” As a result, the university’s human resources department will be collecting and reviewing the facts of the recent incident. A report will then be created for Howard’s superior to determine whether any policies have been violated.

At this time, the results of the human resources review are still pending. The confrontation between Howard and Sanderson started with a disagreement involving senior guard Jace Howard and an athletic trainer. Sanderson then became involved, and words were exchanged between him and Howard. While no physical altercations occurred, the situation became heated, leading to their separation.

Since the incident, Sanderson, who has been an employee at the university for 15 years, has not shown up for work and has not traveled with the team or attended practices. It is currently unclear whether Howard will serve as an assistant or head coach in the upcoming game against Eastern Michigan.

It is important to note that Howard has been in the process of transitioning back to a coaching role this season after undergoing heart surgery in September. However, his past is already marred by the incident in February 2022 when he exchanged words with Wisconsin coach Greg Gard and struck a Wisconsin assistant coach.

Despite the ongoing investigation, Howard’s current contract with the University of Michigan runs through the 2025-26 season. Currently, the team holds a record of 5-5 this season.

As the University of Michigan awaits the conclusion of the investigation into the confrontation between coaches Juwan Howard and Jon Sanderson, the basketball program continues to face uncertainty. Insider Wales Sport will keep you updated on the latest developments surrounding this incident.
