IFPO launches doctoral scholarship in humanities

The Institut Française du Proche-Orient (IFPO) and the cole Normale Superiere (Grande cole and French University) are launching doctoral scholarship programs in the humanities and social sciences for Lebanese students. The initiative, carried out in partnership with the German research institute Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO), is financially supported by the Cedar Foundation, maintained by the French Protestant Association of Beirut. Its purpose, at a time when the situation in the country of Cedars is deteriorating, is to support Lebanese students who wish to stay in the country or who are unlikely to leave. At the same time, it aims to support public or private universities in Lebanon, which are losing the entire region in this time of crisis.

“This program has the distinction of not encouraging outgoing mobility. It is intended for Lebanese students, but also for Syrians, Palestinians or binationals enrolled in universities in Lebanon”, of the Department of Arab, Medieval and Modern Studies at IFPO Director Pauline Koetschet explains. With the idea of ​​”allowing these students to conduct their thesis and their research in Lebanon during their short stay abroad”. Because if the scholarship students live in Lebanon, they should not be cut off from international influence. “Hence the springboard provided to them by the scientific contribution of the ENS or ZMO, without forgetting the benefits that IFPO, its library, its researchers, its seminars receive from the scientific support.” Named after a former professor of Arabic at the ENS, Huda Ayub The only conditions required to be a beneficiary of the scholarship are “to obtain a research master’s from no later than July 2021, to find a thesis supervisor and to submit a thesis project on a topic related to the Middle East,” explains Ms Koetschet Open to Arabic-speaking, French-speaking and English-speaking students, although a certain mastery of French or English is required in this program.
