European Rugby Cup: All matches between French and British clubs postponed

Cold snap on Franco-British exchanges and Red Alert on European Cup. Due to the spread of COVID-19 positive cases and the new restrictions on the borders between France and the United Kingdom, competition organizer EPCR has decided to postpone all relevant meetings. These are the Champions Cups for Bath – La Rochelle, Sail – Clermont, Scarlets – Bordeaux-Begles, Stade Toulouse – Wasps and Stade Français – Bristol. For the European challenge, Worcester – Biarritz and London Irish – Brive have been postponed. It now remains to be seen whether a postponement was impossible when organizers warned that there were no dates blank in the overloaded international calendar.

This Champions Cup COVID edition now seems to be seriously compromised. Especially after the avalanche of positive cases among the British, which had already forced the organizers to cancel a match, Bristol – Scarlett, on the first day, already had two, with Montpellier – Leinster on the second day, The Ospreys, which were won by residents of Hérault, were won by residents of le-de-France for the same reasons – Irish and for the return of racing. The fairness of the competition had been undermined well before this decision was announced.

This Friday morning the still-applied optimism was shattered. While the Inter-Ministerial Crisis Unit decided to issue exemptions for French clubs planning to travel to the United Kingdom later this week despite the new border restrictions, respective clubs have decided to go side-by-side with the Omicron version. Wasn’t too keen on the idea. A meeting of the Presidents this afternoon to record the new procedure to be followed.
