End of clap and mixed results for United Kingdom at Beijing Winter Olympics

The United Kingdom won only two medals at the Beijing Olympics against fourteen for France.

The Olympic Games concluded last night in Beijing with a fireworks display. Games dominated by Norway, Germany and China, and which remind us that winter sports are certainly not a specialty of the United Kingdom.

Poor performance for UK

The Beijing Olympics will not mark the British mind with their success. The British delegation goes almost empty-handed, counting only two medals in two weeks. During the competition, the United Kingdom had no medals to its name, saved by Curling, before waking up at the end of the competition.

The women’s curling team saved the honor by winning the gold medal against Japan on the day of the closing ceremony yesterday. Dominating the game 10 to 3, yesterday’s win added to the silver medal won by the men’s team in curling on Saturday. That’s not enough to equal the five medals won in South Korea in 2018. The British delegation says it is “disappointed” by this poor performance, which does not meet the set goals of at least three to seven medals. She says she wants to do everything possible for the success of her 2026 Games.

France saved by biathlon

For his part, the French sailed with five gold medals, seven silver and two bronze medals. The French delegation comes only tenth in the medal tally. In Pyeongchang, four years earlier, France had finished ninth in the standings with a total of fifteen medals. However, the number of gold medals remains the same – five in total. It should be noted that there were twenty fewer athletes in the delegation this year than in the previous Games.

If France has managed to maintain its objectives, it is thanks above all to the biathlon, which has been the engine of French success. The Games alone won seven medals, half of which included three gold and four silver. France should especially thank one man, biathlete Quentin Fillon Maillet, who snatched five medals in the discipline on his own.

The next edition of the Olympic Games will be held in 2026 in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
