The chairman of the ECOWAS commission, Jean-Claude Brau, called on Burkinabe troops to “remain in a republican posture” and “prioritize dialogue with the authorities” in a press release on Sunday.
“ECOWAS calls for peace and expresses its solidarity with President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, the government and the people of Burkina Faso”, indicated the text of the West African Intergovernmental Organization.
In the press release, Jean-Claude Brau also underlined that ECOWAS is “following the situation with great concern” in the country.
Very early on Sunday morning, heavy-armed fire was heard at Camp Sangoule Lamizana and Baba Si in Ouagadougou.
In response, Burkinabe government spokesman Alkasoum Maga confirmed the firing, but denied a coup.
On January 8, a dozen soldiers and civilians were arrested on suspicion of a coup in Burkina Faso.
