Drama for former champion Ashleigh Barty at Roland Garros | Tennis

The 25-year-old Barty lost the first set 6-1 to Polish Magda Lynette. After the opening set, Barty was already treated off the track on his left hip. It was 2-2 in the second set.

Barty, who had barely progressed after a disappointing first set defeat, tried again in the second set. He won his first two service games, but after Lynette drew 2–2, he concluded that further play was worthless.

Preparation

In the run-up to Roland Garros, Barty was already suffering an arm injury and in the first round she played with a wrapped left thigh. The Global No. 1 played several matches in this clay-court season. She won the title in Stuttgart and was a finalist in Madrid. In mid-May, he lost against Cori Gauff in Rome, with a fine lead.

Barty won the Roland Garros in 2019 by defeating Czech Marketa Vondrosova in the final. Last year she missed the Grand Slam tournament due to the coronavirus and related travel restrictions.

World number 45 Lynette will take on Tunisian Ons Jabur in the third round.
