DFDS confirms its roots in Ste and its good results in 2021

Since 24 March, DFDS has offered a rail service between Sète-Frontignan in Germany and the port of Cologne. Operated in partnership with Cargobeamer and Europorte, the line offers two round trips per week with a capacity of 42 containers, swapped bodies and crenable trailers per trip.

Its launch is based, in particular, on the traffic of Ekol Logistics, which uses the DFDS maritime highway between Sete and Yolova in Turkey. This sea link makes four trips per week today. The Danish group is already planning to strengthen its rail service between Sete and Cologne with a third weekly rotation.

“This new service provides our customers with an alternative route from Turkey to Cologne. We also plan to introduce a line from Sete to Calais to offer a new solution to connect Turkey to the UK,” Company Management.

net profit doubled

In 2021, DFDS results returned to growth after the 2020 financial year was disrupted by the Covid pandemic. Its turnover grew by almost 28% to 2.4 billion euros.

Its ferry division, the source of 66% of these revenues, including its activities in port terminals, grew by 25%. An increase in tariffs in freight traffic explains this increase, despite a 4.7% drop in tonnage. In 2021, freight generated 90% of this branch’s business, especially with Turkey, with a significant increase in Mediterranean traffic.

Elsewhere, revenues remained stagnant or increased, even in cross-channel markets despite Brexit. Passengers are still at half mast, however, with a further drop of 42% in the number of passengers transported. The second division of DFDS brings together its logistics activities.

Its turnover of 962 million euros grew by 35%. For the group, the economic recovery explains this development, in addition to the integration of HSF Logistics, a company specializing in temperature controlled transportation and logistics, integrated into its accounts since September 14, 2021.

The rising revenue of DFDS was accompanied by improved profitability in 2021. Its operating profit increased by 81% to EUR 181 million and its net profit increased by 220% to EUR 131 million.
