COVID-19: Third effective dose against Omicron, confirms INSPQ

A third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine effectively protects against the harmful effects of Omicron at any level of disease severity, confirms a new study from Quebec’s National Institute of Public Health (INSPQ) in detail.

The prevention of hospitalization increases from 80% to 90% among people who have been vaccinated three times, indicates a brief scientific opinion made public on Wednesday.

The study is based on preliminary data collected between December 26, 2021 and February 5, 2022, that is, when the Omicron variant was dominant in Quebec.

“The vaccine’s effectiveness in preventing emergency room visits was approximately 60% after two doses and 85% after three doses,” the researchers noted.

With regard to the prevention of a “mild disease”, the vaccine’s effectiveness increases from 45% after two doses to 80% after three doses.

These statistical discrepancies are observed for all vaccine types and all combinations, with the exception of those produced by AstraZeneca. “Slightly low in efficacy” [les personnes] The study noted that only two doses of Vaxazevaria/Covishield vaccine were received.

The INSPQ results also confirm that the protection provided by vaccines is “rather constant” over the long term. About 10% reduction in protection against COVID-19 has been observed after 32 weeks.

About 45% of the Quebec population received a third dose by February 15.
