Researchers looked at data by the UK Biobank of around 500,000 people aged between 40 and 69 between 2006 and 2010. This study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that consuming 25 grams of processed meat or the equivalent of one slice of bacon per day increased the chances of dying by 44%. In this study, 2,896 cases of dementia were diagnosed on an average of 8 years. Those most affected by these dementia are usually older, more deprived, less educated, more likely to smoke, less physically active and more likely to have a family history of stroke and dementia. While men are more exposed than women, researchers found through the results that the risks associated with the intake of processed meat remain the same whether a person is genetically predisposed to develop the disease.
More red meat for less insanity?
