LONDON (AP) – London and other areas of south-east England have had a tough shutdown with curfew since Sunday night. The reason for this is the rapid spread of a new version of coronavirus.
Tightening affects about 16.4 million people, about a third of England’s population. You are not allowed to meet members of other houses at Christmas. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Twitter on Saturday evening, “As Prime Minister, it is my duty to make difficult decisions and do what needs to be done to protect the people of this country.”
He had recently rejected calls from the opposition to implement strict measures on academics and holidays. Now millions have to celebrate alone. “We are giving our loved ones the opportunity to see this Christmas so that we have a better chance of saving their lives so that we can see them on Christmas in the future.”
The Prime Minister warned that the new version of the Corona virus VUI2020 / 12/01 was spreading rapidly. Mutations are 70 percent more infectious than previously known forms. Many clinics in south-east England are almost completely occupied, and unnecessary operations have been postponed in many places. Johnson asserted that there is no evidence that vaccines were less effective than the new Corona variant, nor that the disease was more severe or caused more deaths.
To be on the safe side, social life is taking off in large parts of the country. In London and other areas in southeast England, the new highest Corona Alert Level 4 will apply in the future. People there are only allowed to leave their homes for important reasons, for example to go to the doctor or to work. All non-essential businesses such as fitness studios, hairdressers, cinema and beauty salons have to be closed. Residents are not allowed to leave this area.
There have been three levels in England so far. It was planned that together from December 23 to 27, three Christmas houses would form “Christmas bubbles”. It is now limited to Christmas Day outside Zone 4. Other parts of the country also tightened the rules. In Wales, with more than 3.1 million inhabitants, there is also a tough shutdown, with Scotland banning travel to other areas. It was still unclear whether Northern Ireland would also introduce new measures. There, due to the high number of new infections, ambulances were recently jammed in front of emergency rooms, and ambulances from the neighboring EU state of Ireland helped.
Great Britain is one of the toughest countries in Europe due to the Corona crisis. On Saturday, the number of infections increased by nearly 27,000 to more than two million. About 83,000 people have died of or with lung disease Kovid-19 so far. The government introduced good vaccination ten days ago. As Johnson said, so far, around 350,000 people across the country have received funding from Mens-based pharmaceutical company Beotech and its US partner Pfizer.
SPD health expert Carl Lauterbach warned of a mutation in the corona virus. “It is very likely that mutations increase the risk of infection,” he told Editorial Network Germany (RND, Sonntag). “That’s why the second wave may not be so strong. The more infections you allow, the greater the chance of a dangerous mutation. This is practically a vicious cycle: more infection leads to more opportunities for mutation and thus more mutation. These in turn cause more infections. So it goes ahead. ”
