Brights break away from bread, supermarket chain cuts 1,200 baker jobs

Due to an inefficiency for traditional bread, British Distribution Asda’s No. 3 will cut 1,200 jobs in its bakery locations.

British supermarket chain Asda plans to cut 1,200 jobs in its bakery space, in order to shift traditional bread from customers in favor of other products such as bagels or patties.

Asda, who lives at number three in the sector of the United Kingdom, says that according to a statement released on Wednesday evening, this work in 341 shops is a concern of the bakery department.

The group has started consultations with its employees and wants to do everything to avoid layoffs, for example by offering affected employees other positions. Instead of baking bread in stores, the group would use a centralized site that would distribute the finished products to supermarkets every day.

This is to meet the changing demand of customers who are moving away from traditional breads, to seek out more specialized breads, patties, bagels, and other pancakes.

“The current in-store bakery model punishes our ability to respond to changes in customer demand,” said Derek Loral, Assad’s manager.

Tesco had cut 1,800 jobs

The company’s decision was criticized by the GMB union, saying it was bad news for consumers and employees.

Roger Jenkins, a union official, said, “GMB tells Asda to keep its skilled employees and continue offering new products made by professional bakers to customers.”

Asda was recently sold to the brothers Moshin and Zuber Issa, who made a fortune at gas stations, tied up with the fund fund TDR Capital for £ 6.8bn. But the decision on the bakery was taken independently by the Issa brothers.

The UK competition policeman is investigating the deal and the new owners cannot influence Asda until it is decided.

For its part, British number one supermarket Tesco took a similar measure in early 2020 by announcing a cut of 1,800 jobs in the bakery space. He also spoke about the change in consumption habits of customers.
