Brandenburg exports to the United Kingdom are recovering after Brexit. After the United Kingdom left the European Union, Brandenburg’s exports to the island fell by about 22 percent in the first quarter of 2021, but then recovered again, with more than 9.4 percent in the entire first half of 2021. The United Kingdom was the seventh most important trading partner of Brandenburg in 2019.

The United Kingdom left the European Union (EU) on January 1, 2021. Brandenburg exports to the United Kingdom fell by 22.2 percent in the first quarter of 2021 and recovered in the first half of 2021, with each case increasing by 9.4 percent compared to the same period last year. British imports in Brandenburg showed a declining trend in the first half of 2021: compared to the first half of 2020, they fell 41.1 percent.

Compared to the first half of 2019, which was not yet affected by the pandemic, exports to the United Kingdom saw a 21.6 percent increase, as reported by the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office. A declining trend in British imports was also evident, with 59.3 percent (preliminary data) compared to the first half of 2019.

In 2019, the United Kingdom was the seventh most important trading partner of Brandenburg in terms of trade volume. It was ranked 7th for exports and 5th for imports. At 584 million euros, Brandenburg’s exports to the United Kingdom accounted for 0.7 percent of German exports to the United Kingdom. British imports to Brandenburg accounted for 2.5 percent of British imports into Germany, valued at 956 million euros.

Developments since the referendum in 2016

In 2015, a year before the referendum on remaining in the European Union, Brandenburg gave goods worth 464 million euros to the United Kingdom. It has grown steadily since 2018 and reached a value of 599 million euros in 2020. From 2016 to 2020, Brandenburg’s exports to the United Kingdom increased by 28.3 percent.

In 2015, the United Kingdom delivered goods worth EUR 948 million to Brandenburg. This import value fell to 597 million euros in 2020. From 2016 to 2020, UK imports fell 34.4 percent.

Brandenburg’s exports to the world grew 10.5 percent compared to the first half of 2020, but were still 1.5 percent below the level in the first half of 2019. In the period from 2016 to 2020, the delivery of goods from Brandenburg decreased by 10, 0. percentage back.

Global imports for Brandenburg grew positively with an increase of 23.4 percent compared to the first half of 2020 and 8.4 percent compared to the first half of 2019. From 2016 to 2020, imports into Brandenburg increased by 13.0 percent.

Like the Brandenburg growth, British deliveries of goods to Germany saw a decline (10.9 percent compared to the first half of 2020; -13.0 percent compared to the first half of 2019). British imports to Germany also fell 2.4 percent in the years between the Brexit vote and 2020.
